In-depth Analysis
Optical Communications / Optical Chips: No major new developments today. Key leads to monitor: The US-listed optical communications sector trended down on October 7; Corning, Coherent and Ciena fell more than 3%, while memory stocks pulled back in tandem. On the industrial side, GF Securities believes NVIDIA’s horizontal rollout of CPO is progressing faster than expected. Lumentum’s CPO/NPO laser revenue may rise to USD 750 million / USD 2.55 billion by 2028. The JWEI IICIE Silicon Photonics Summit centered on the transition from copper to optical interconnect and the commercialization of CPO, with Lankun Micro showcasing its OIO optical interconnect chips.
Advanced Packaging & Testing: Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced plans to invest nearly USD 5 billion by 2028 to expand FC-BGA substrate capacity in Sejong, South Korea (approximately USD 3.2 billion) and Vietnam (approximately USD 1.87 billion). Its facility in Thái Nguyên, Vietnam has passed pilot production qualification and entered mass manufacturing, reflecting robust demand for high-layer-count substrates driven by AI servers, robots and smart vehicles. On the materials front, per JWEI reports, Huahai Chengke posted 162% YoY revenue growth in H1, boosted by consolidation of Hengsu Huawei, mainly in epoxy molding compound (EMC). Domestic capacity expansion for computing PCB continues. Guanghe Technology intends to issue A-share convertible bonds of up to RMB 3.6 billion to fund Phase II of its Yunqing Intelligent Manufacturing Base and high-layer PCB projects. Tight supply of ABF substrates remains unchanged.
SiC / Power Semiconductors: Wolfspeed secured a USD 1.5 billion loan commitment, easing prior pressure on capacity and balance sheet. Its US stock jumped 28% in after-hours trading, representing a rare positive financing signal for the SiC segment recently. Tianyu Semiconductor repurchased 38,600 H-shares on October 7 (worth around HKD 1.9991 million), to be held as treasury shares. Overall, no major new shifts in pricing or supply-demand dynamics for third-generation semiconductors today.
Memory & Compute Chips: Nanya Technology plans another DRAM contract price hike of up to 20%, and memory price inflation continues to pass through to contract pricing. AMD stated memory supply remains tight with demand exceeding supply, expressed satisfaction with HBM4, and is exploring memory and foundry collaboration with Samsung. Solidigm has reportedly selected Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley as lead underwriters for its US IPO targeted in 2027, aiming to raise roughly USD 10 billion with a post-money valuation pegged as high as USD 100 billion. On compute chips, Broadcom arranged over USD 50 billion in financing for its custom AI chip project with OpenAI (Apollo Global and Blackstone are in talks to participate). SpaceX is considering raising USD 40 billion to purchase NVIDIA chips. NVIDIA and Microsoft launched the RTX Spark / DGX Station for Windows enterprise desktops, with shipments starting next week.
Equipment & Materials: SukeSi closed a RMB 40 million Series A financing round. The firm focuses on TGV through-glass-via electroplating, wafer/panel-level electroplating and cleaning equipment. Japan’s TOWA plans to build a new semiconductor equipment factory to strengthen its domestic supply chain. Together with rising memory prices, the price pass-through logic persists for silicon wafers, electronic specialty gases and substrate materials.
Wafer Foundry: TSMC’s ADR hit an all-time high on October 5, reaching a market cap of USD 2.5 trillion. Hong Kong-listed chip stocks weakened on October 7; SMIC dropped over 1% and Hua Hong Semiconductor fell more than 2%. Price hikes and full capacity utilization continue across both mature and advanced process nodes.
Policy / Macro Environment: The revised Regulations on the Protection of Layout-Designs of Integrated Circuits will take effect on October 15, further aligning the intellectual property protection regime. Valdis Dombrovskis, European Commission Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, will visit Beijing. The EU-China Trade and Investment Dialogue covers four pillars: trade balance, export controls, intellectual property and WTO reform, with export controls under close scrutiny. Elon Musk clarified that his company will independently build and operate Terafab, ruling out TSMC as the operator; TSMC may only sublease part of the premises at most.
Daily Investment Tips
1. Supply tightness continues to be reflected in pricing: Nanya Technology’s further hike of DRAM contract prices, Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ USD 5 billion investment to expand FC-BGA capacity, and Richard Yu’s remarks on mounting memory cost pressure collectively validate the “rising volume and price” trend within memory and substrate segments. Investors may focus on domestic memory players, packaging substrates / ABF-like films, and the packaging & testing supply chain.
2. Watch out for high-level volatility and external shocks: US-listed memory and optical communication sectors saw a synchronized pullback on October 7. South Korean leveraged ETFs reportedly caused retail investors losses of approximately USD 1.7 billion. Coupled with elevated US Treasury yields and Middle East geopolitical tensions, sentiment volatility has intensified for high-flying AI hardware names. It is advisable to track the pace of price-hike realization and order execution, and control the risk of chasing high valuations.
